Ceo Leadership Qualities
It is necessary for any CEO to lead from the front as his subordinates are liable to follow his decisions. Hence the most important quality that he should have is that he should be a great leader.
The CEO in any organization has to lead from the front. His managers depend on him for making the important decisions to accomplish the objectives of the organization. Let us have a look at what type of leadership qualities should the CEO have.
The CEO, as a leader should firstly have value based goals in mind. The goals should be measureable (and not ambiguous or vague) so that the management is clear about the objectives. This leads to a continuous sense of direction to the employees who can compare the actual results with the expected results and then make changes accordingly.
One of the most important qualities that a CEO should have is a sense of mission. He should be clear and precise about his mission and what he expects from his subordinates. The CEO should have the courage to stand up to and face any situation. He should not lose his focus and persistently stay on the course and come up with a viable solution for the difficulty.
The CEO should also be action oriented. This means that he should be forward thinking and entrepreneurial. He should instill an attitude of “I can do it” in himself and his employees. He should make the subordinates realize that there is a direct connection between the organization’s progress and the employee’s performance.
A CEO should be future oriented. He should ideally foresee the future and he should mold the organization in that direction. As a leader, he should have a ‘never give up attitude’. He should have the attitude of learning from his mistakes and he should display a level of commitment. The CEO should be a like a father figure to his subordinates and at the same time he should listen to their suggestions and woes.
Good listening skills is what today’s CEO requires. He should be open to suggestions and advise but in the end he should make the final decision. He should encourage his subordinates to discuss with him any new ideas that come to their minds. He should be willing to take calculated risks as a leader and he should not be afraid of success. He should always portray a commitment to excellence and see to it that products and services of the company comply with quality performance.
The CEO is expected to be a big picture thinker and he should consider all outcomes and options to achieve the company’s goals. He should take full advantage of his strengths and work on his weaknesses. He should be highly committed and motivate the others regularly. He should be a quick problem solver and this could include intervening in case of quarrels in the organization as well as any emergency faced by the organization.
The CEO should also be an effective communicator. He should devise a communication channel that is less likely to change the message as it goes down the hierarchy. Studies show that several organizations have not been able to succeed just because they didn’t have a proper communication channel.
The CEO should not work behind closed doors. He should be easily accessible to his subordinates as he is the most important ambassador of his organization. He should even take regular feedback from his subordinates, suppliers and customers so that he can explore avenues of improvement, if required.
As an able leader, the CEO should be an out and out team man. He should have the right participative skills to lead his team. He should encourage unity in his team and all members should realize that the collective contribution will lead to the success of the organization. The CEO has the sole rights to hire and fire his subordinates. One of the other important things expected from the CEO include prioritizing the tasks at hand. This means accomplishing the most important tasks first and doing the less important tasks afterwards.
It is the love of leadership that makes a CEO self compliant. He knows exactly what he is doing and he has the ability to make his subordinates follow him. And this can only happen when his subordinates have faith in him. The CEO should have self motivation skills, he can’t depend in someone else for his motivation. In fact, he has to motivate others. The CEO should also evaluate his performance from time to time. This way he knows exactly where he stands.
A good CEO will always get respect instead of demanding for respect. He can get this respect only if the subordinates are with him and they like him as their leader. They understand that credibility and trust are the strong foundations of leadership. Last but not the least, the CEO will have a serious commitment for self learning and he will ensure that he passes on the commitment principles to his subordinates as well.
